I dug out yet another Old Laptop – this time A Dell Latitude C840. The Tech specs I shall post in one second but for this exercise, I choose to download Ubuntu 10.04 Beta One (been new and all) and went to work installing Ubuntu plus working with Compiz to give me a radical 3D Desktop – this was not to be as you shall soon find out..

Fragmented Android
In the world of Apple with the iPhone, the same company sells you the phones as the one making the operating system but in the world of Android – One company makes the phones, another writes most of the OS, another bolt on a GUI and finally the Phone operators add there little bit to the phone – we have in fact Fragmentation.
UltraVNC – Free Remote Control
I was searching for a VNC Client and normally either choose TightVNC or RealVNC but I happened to come across a more feature rich tool by the name of UltraVNC – thjis is Open source and thus Free.
Key features: File transfer, Video driver, Optional Encryption Plugins, MS Logon, Text chat, Viewer Toolbar, Java Viewer with File Transfer , as well as Auto scaling and Server Side Scaling, Multiple-Monitors-support,Repeater/Proxy-support, Auto reconnection, good performances and tons of other functionalities.
Addons: Repeater , SingleClick generator and NATtoNAT connectors , that help you to easily handle the most complex connection situations.
UltraVNC runs under Windows operating systems (2000, XP, 2003, Vista, Windows 7 ) 32 and 64bit. 95, 98, Me, NT4 require v102. Its embedded Java Viewer allows you to connect (and make File transfers) from a simple Web Browser on any Operating system supporting Java (Linux, Mac OS…) to an UltraVNC server.
Cutting Costs
Just the other day I sat there and questioned as to all the little gadgets I buy and of what use they were and was I in fact just wasting money blinded by flashing lights and whizzing noises as I walked around the stores? Why do I have so many computers lying around doing nothing for example, these been the previous main used machine but since moved into second place due to a newer model sitting in the main spot. How many times have you seen a device and thought “that would be great for …..”
Moving Stuff around
Every now and then, I get bored of the placement or set-up of my computer related equipment and have a change around. Sometimes It is major – such as moving desks around the room and other times it is just a small change to what I have. I have seen people place all there monitors next to each other from different systems to create one large working area and also use SynergyKVM to lessen then number of keyboards and mice in use.
Monitoring Electricity usage
I pay for my Gas and Electricity on a 3 months cycle, I always pass a meter reading to make sure that it is true to life and none of this Estimated stuff as that could leave you with a nasty shock when they do actually read the meters. Due to both the high prices and how much equipment I own that is powered by electricity – I decided to get myself one of those fancy meters that tell you in real time how much is been used and how much it all costs. I Called my Supplier (Souther Electric) and switched to a package which allows the free device.
Philips Headphones – SBCHP460
I was in the market for some headphones – my requirements were simply that they were of the large cup (but not too big), had a volume control, a long lead plus sounded good for music. The reason for this was my Logitech Premium headset was great for Skype but when listening to music on the computer – the sound would bleed through. Most headphones I saw did not come with a volume control, I could have just bought another headset complete with microphone but did not need this plus they would probably be bad quality anyhow.
multi card reader SDHC support
On most of my desktop and laptop computers I have various memory card readers but they all seem to be missing the one I need – this been Micro SD. While out today in one of these cheap shops where everything is £1 ($1.50) – I Spotted this all-in-one reader. My reasoning here is that you cannot go really too wrong given the price, I knew it would work as in picking up the device so I took the plunge and bought the thing.
