As time moves forward, so does technology and with it the need to store data on something that may last. I only just read about floppies finally dying (though I still have a USB Model and a box full of blanks) and I thought I would pass my thoughts on the media that I use today and why I feel that CD-R and DVD-R may as well be dead too.
A Question of size
It was not that long ago that I used to happily stick off my files on blank CD and then later DVD-R and more recently DVD-DL (8.5Gig). I even used DVD’s as a mean to watch movies and with just one movie per DVD, it was something I had to Store in boxes and this was not good. The other issue with this media is over time even if you do not use it – it becomes scratched or unreadable or worse still, the information on there is well out of date.
Enter the Memory Sticks
I lost count of the number of CD’s I burned to try out the various Linux distributions and later chucked them right away. These days armed with a memory stick, you can boot Linux much faster or even run it from the memory stick. I can plug the same memory stick into my car and listen to music – I am afraid for me, CD is just dead – I have a rack left I use now and then – it may take me the rest of this year to use them all up.
Movies
Armed with the WDTV unit – why would I want to be putting movies on at a time through the DVD player? Quite simply all movies now live on a 1TB drive – once again I have a couple of packs (100) or DVD & DVD-DL, I use them now and them but frankly – they might as well be dead also.
Do you use this media?
Are you still a fan of CD/DVD etc? Have you progressed to Blu-Ray maybe?
