While I spent every waking hour training in the British Army, it has been some years now since I did any sort of work out and it was apparent by my skinny body and skinny arms – but this changed one day, it was time to get fit and get bigger (and stronger). It is all too easy to put this off, after all would you rather be sitting in front of the TV or a computer then pounding the streets or chucking weights around for hours at a time right? This is my story (so far) of how I aim to get fitter without spending lots of money on gym’s and the like.
Slow Start
The equipment I had already was one of them complete weight lifting sets which you fill with sand and such. I had all but got rid of most of it apart from the actual bars and weights and as there was a whole load of these in the pack, I had to be creative initially on using this set. I started by having a Curling Bar with 30KG (15 a side) in my computer room and did various lifts with this. As it was winter back then – going into the Garage was not only a pain in the butt but also cold, so that only happened now and then.
Better weather, time to get to work
Once the winter had gone, I started a more steady training session and even started to target more muscles (such as Stomach). I felt the need though to look at joining something and the first thing that came to mind was Kick Boxing but why waste money on this when I was so out of shape and not flexible at all. I went out and bought a Punching bag – this was previously £129 but they had it on sale for £39, this is he complete kit, bag, gloves. wraps, chain, hook and so on.
Getting a sweat on
Working out and then punching and kicking this bag for 20 minutes at a time made you sweat – just shows how much I was out of shape to be honest. After a full day of work I must admit that the last thing on my mind is working out for 1 hour but you need will power – it will all start to come forth in the end. I can see the difference already, my arms are much bigger, my neck has gained 1.5 Inches, My chest has gained 6 inches and so forth but this is only just the start of the plan.
Feeling better for it
It is surprising how great you feel the next morning, you have energy and of course you look better. My end goal? Due to my small frame I am never going to be that Big in reality so I am aiming more at strength and will enforce this later by taking up kick boxing. What advice would I give somebody who maybe is 300lbs and feels they will never get there? Start slow, keep working at it, even if only small steps and you will get there, it is not going to happen overnight.
