Google Products outside of the USA?

Google frequently have a new service they offer out and is the normal with Google, they start the thing in Beta, send out invites and finally after a long time, they let the world and his dog sign up. The best example was Google Mail, this used to be Invite only at one point and now anyone can join. A few recent services though have been released in the USA but have not made it at all to the UK. Is there a reason why Google feel only the USA can benefit from these services or is there other reasons?

Do I need a new machine such as the 27″ iMac?

iMac 27 Inch

Apple got out the Door the new range of iMac’s – this rather like the older range with the same 27″ Screen, all-in-one design, still no Blu-Ray drive and so forth. The Difference is inside, the CPU is faster (Sandy Bridge model), it now has 2 thunderbolt ports (which I cannot see myself using any-time soon) and the 6 Series ATI Graphics card. The Downside to any “All-in-One” type system is that you cannot really upgrade the thing and if it breaks, your whole system goes down. My thoughts on the iMac in general is that it is a very nice system that is free from clutter but of course as it is all built into the same case, leaving the system switched on overnight is a pain compared to a PC which has an on/off switch for the monitor. The question here then is not if the imac is fit for purpose but rather “Do I really need to buy more hardware”?

Valve makes Team Fortress 2 Free

Online games portal Steam has bolstered its selection of free games by adding one of its own-brand titles to the pot: the hectic, caricatured first-person shooter Team Fortress 2. It used to be part of the Orange Pack for example and it features cartoon like graphics plus team play. The way they will make money is to have micro payments in the game itself and you can buy extra guns, costumes and so forth. PogoPlug now offers Free Software Version

Pogoplug the Makers of the fluffy pink USB Sharing device have branched out to include a new product – one that runs on your Windows or Mac computer and allows you to share everything across the web – your own cloud as it were. They have two version, the free one which allows you to see all your files and if you pay the $29 Upgrade Fee – play all your music and video’s. Head over to PogoPlug Site and check it out.

Training cycle continues onwards

Seen as it was the 20th May the last time I wrote anything, I would hate to think that people thought I had given up this training schedule. The only difference is that I was sure people got bored reading about me keeping fit and thus why I have not posted as much. SO what has changed since we last posted? The first thing was I changed from a 5 day schedule to a 4 day schedule, this meant I trained Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday – giving my body more time to recover. I had a medical check at work for the over 40′s which tells you if you are due a heart attack and such – more on this in a bit though.

StarTech 1.8in USB to Micro SATA Hard Drive Enclosure

If you have a spare 1.8inch drive hanging about with a micro SATA Connector, it is handy to place this into a external case and use it as a spare drive. The case comes in a box which includes the instruction manual, some extra sponge bits for smaller drives, a screwdriver, a USB Lead, a pouch and the case itself. Size wise it is 96mm x 60mm x 12mm, so you can see it is very small indeed.

What is the purpose of Facebook?

Facebook has been around for some time now and it overtook MySpace back in the day. It works by you added people for which they have to accept and any posts that people do, be it a simple line of text, a video or photo’s – will appear in the time-line. It went further of later as it allowed you to put people into groups and then instead of writing a post that made no sense to work people, you can specify Family only for example.

I like to think Facebook is a big bulletin board that people you know can leave messages on detailing what they are doing, post new pictures and so forth. It is ideal for example if someone just had a new baby and everybody can get to see the pictures quickly. My question though is this – “Just what do you write on Facebook Status updates that people won’t deem boring?”

Ekahau HeatMapper WiFi Site Survey Tool

You can probably pay people good money to produce a detailed drawing of your wireless coverage but there is a way to do this yourself using a free tool called Ekahau HeatMapper – this is better then having your tiny little wireless signal meter and randomly going around a building seeing how many bars you have. The software is not automatic and you have to do a lot of the work yourself, clicking as you walk around but the end result is very good.
