I came across a strange problem at work, a person could not open any Excel documents from email, short-cuts on his desktop and so forth but he could open up Excel and open the file that way. My first course of action was to go into add/remove and repair the office install, this never fixed the problem. Going to the windows update, I made sure it had all the updates, still the problem was there. I did some searching around and found the answer, this I would like to share with you.

HP 6715B Laptop Slow Boot
I have an HP 6715B Laptop which is powered by the AMD Turion 64 X2, features the ATI’s Radeon Xpress X1250 and one of the great features of this 15.4 inch laptop is the fact the display runs at 1680 x 1050 which is equivalent to a 20″ display right. Now the Laptop is getting on a bit these days and HP laptops in my own experience tend to suffer badly with mainly the graphics failing. My Problem is that upon switching on the Laptop, the BIOS Screen with sit there for a good while, maybe 5 minutes or more? Once it got past that it booted and worked fine.

Why to not trust pirated software
You head along to your local torrent or newsgroup site and see some new application, a game that has just come out or a copy of the Operating System DVD and you grab it thinking if it is infected with a virus, your current AntiVirus is bound to flag it up. Of course this act is illegal but this is not the purpose of this article. I wanted to go through a handful of things that you need to think hard about and why, if the software or game is not too expensive, you should buy it.

NameBench – Opensource DNS Benchmark Utiliy
DNS is a service that changes what you type (such as Google.com) into a valid IP Address that computers & routers understand. Your ISP handles this normally and is transparent to most but there is alternatives out there such as OpenDNS and Google DNS to name but two. In a nutshell, this utility will go through a whole rafter of different DNS services, measures them and give you a nice pretty graph at the end. Give the program a try , it runs on OSX, Windows and Linux. I tested mine and it worked out that my very own ISP was faster.
Do we really need DVD these days?
We have seen that the new Mac Mini is now void of any drive to insert DVD’s into and f you look at any of the latest tablet / laptop type computers – they too have no drive to insert any DVD’s into. You may ask yourself what if you wanted to install the operating system, what about playing DVD movies and god forbid you wanted to sabre some data to cd to send off right?
I wanted to use this post to look at ways to show that in fact CD/DVD as a medium is in fact dying out and there is always a way around doing things better using other media, namely memory sticks.
Google plus – a quick overview
I thought I would write a quick overview of what to expect in the current form of google plus, as many people will already have this, I will be preaching to the converted but I do offer some thoughts on what I think is wrong with the service and also how they could make it better. I got into Google plus by way of an invite, I think they have now opened this up to everybody when I last checked as long as you have a google mail account. They say it is meant to be a FaceBook Killer but of course it has a long way to go before it can over take such a thing.
Google Products outside of the USA?
Google frequently have a new service they offer out and is the normal with Google, they start the thing in Beta, send out invites and finally after a long time, they let the world and his dog sign up. The best example was Google Mail, this used to be Invite only at one point and now anyone can join. A few recent services though have been released in the USA but have not made it at all to the UK. Is there a reason why Google feel only the USA can benefit from these services or is there other reasons?
