I have to hold my hand up and say that I never really fully understand the lure of Twitter, it allows you to write upto 140 Characters and let everyone know what you are doing. The problem lies in that just like email, you can get spammed with useless infomation if you are not careful.

Let us examine first of all how it could be used by real people – I add a whole bunch of people I have met either on-line or in real life who also have Twitter Accounts and they also add me back, this gives you a number and like anything in life, the bigger this number, the more popular you seem to be. On this model – I Twitter that I am going Live or I am playing World of Warcraft and any of my friends can quickly join my in this – the same works the other way as well of course and it is a way of sort of keeping track of what others are doing.

Now let us imagine that you wanted to have LOADS of people following you and in return you follow them back, if you had let us say 500 people on there, the chance of actually seeing a Twitter that might be relevant is slim to none. I joined a few of these so called “get loads of users” sites for twitter and very quickly a couple of things became apparent:

When I stopped following people, they equalliy stopped following me – almost automated in fact.

These sites used MY Account to Twitter as if it came from me – this I was not happy about as it gives the wrong impression like saying “I think this is great, you should try it also”.

What I do is this – I quite happily Follow people as I come across them (real people not automated sites) and I give them a while to see if they follow me back, if they do not, then I remove them. The other aspect is if one person keeps spamming the Twitter advertising there site every 5 seconds, they also are gone. I am not that bothered that my Numbers are Low, I already wasted my time trying to boost my numbers on Last.FM, Livestream and so forth – its a stupid pointless task that gets you nowhere really – so what I have listened to over 50K worth of songs …. And??

I know others have found sucess in having many people but I am happy to carry on as I am with only the people I want to see updates from…
