Linux Mint 8 – another day at the office

Linux Mint

If you look at the last story on the Toshiba 1800-400 Laptop, you would have seen how I never managed to get an Old laptop working at all on Linux, in this instance Windows XP gives you a VGA driver before installing any chipset drivers, which means you can at least see what is going on and it does not crash when you insert a PCMCIA Card. Today, I thought I would install the same Linux Mint 8 on a desktop computer, surely this would work much better right?

Toshiba Satellite S1800-400

imageI remember buying this laptop back in 2001, I had just started a contract position were I was doing project management and required my own computer. I was in Dixons in MeadowHall and they had this laptop on offer at a much reduced price (cannot remember the price I paid back then). My thought was it was made by Toshiba and would do the job specified. I recently grabbed this machine out of storage to see what I can do with it – I had an idea to use it for a Linux box of some sort.

Install Eggdrop on Ubuntu 9.10

google-bot-850

EggDrop: Eggdrop is an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) program for Linux or UNIX users that sits in the background of an IRC Channel to manage and protect a chat. Eggdrop, sometimes referred to as a “bot” (short for “robot”) program, allows the chat manager to keep a list of users, erase users who haven’t been on the channel within a specific time period, keep a list of users who have been banned, prevent channel flooding, and perform other common chat channel management tasks. In this guide, I shall merge the one already online with my own additions to get it up and running.

Mac inability to see Windows Shares.

ist2_3470051_file_sharing

I am running Mac OS X 10.5. 6 and through the long history of the updates from 10.5.0 till now there has been a problem with seeing Windows Shares on the Mac Finder. The way it should work is simple enough, you open a window showing your drives and listed right there would be all the shares it has found but the list remain empty meaning you have to do this the hard way.
