Do we really need DVD these days?

We have seen that the new Mac Mini is now void of any drive to insert DVD’s into and f you look at any of the latest tablet / laptop type computers – they too have no drive to insert any DVD’s into. You may ask yourself what if you wanted to install the operating system, what about playing DVD movies and god forbid you wanted to sabre some data to cd to send off right?

I wanted to use this post to look at ways to show that in fact CD/DVD as a medium is in fact dying out and there is always a way around doing things better using other media, namely memory sticks.

Kingston Data Traveller G2 USB Stick

USB Memory Sticks are common and cheap these days and there is a whole range of designs and types to choose from. As I use these on a daily basis, you soon get to know what works and what does not and I felt the need to write a very quick Blog post in reference to the Kingston Data Traveller G2 – though any type that slides out and locks could have the same issue. These work by the USB part going inside the body and they lock in the out position for use – thus cutting down on the size. The problem comes when the part that locks the port out does not work as well. With daily use, these will eventually not lock in as tight as they used to and upon trying to insert into a Port – the USB part going back inside the body. The solution is to tape the thing to stop it going back in.

Medion 4GIG USB Memory Stick with reader

Once again while out shopping for the odds and ends at Aldi, I spotted what I thought was a cheaper than normal 4GIG memory stick. I bought this item as it was mixed in with the 4GIG SDHC Memory cards and had a sign saying £6.79 and as I needed a  USB Key (8 would have been better), I bought this along with the rest of the shopping. I had not checked the receipt they printed off and once home, discarded all the box it came in (plastic wrap) and went on to use it.

multi card reader SDHC support

On most of my desktop and laptop computers I have various memory card readers but they all seem to be missing the one I need – this been Micro SD. While out today in one of these cheap shops where everything is £1 ($1.50) – I Spotted this all-in-one reader. My reasoning here is that you cannot go really too wrong given the price, I knew it would work as in picking up the device so I took the plunge and bought the thing.

How much graphics memory do you really need?

You feel you need better graphics card for whatever reason and you look around, you see the model with 1GIG or more of Graphics card and without having the full knowledge, 256meg is pointless, 512meg is maybe just enough and 1GIG should get you along while anything else will just be amazing right? I can point you to this article on TomsHardware about how much you really need, but I shall add my own twist.
