Recently I was in need of a box that would supply power to a device that only works via PoE (Power over Ethernet). In companies it is standard to have this built into the core switches as they provide Telephones powered by only the network cable and also the IP Camera’s dotted about and such. I did not need an entire switch with this built-in and did not want to spend a great deal of money. My Searches took me to the TP-Link TL-POE150S this been a simple enough device in that you plug in the power brick into one end along with your network cable feeding into the switch and from the other end you can plug in your device, in my case this was an IP Camera.

Fitness Training – the update
In respect to the last post Joining a Gym – I thought I would update people on my progress. I have a few goals in mind, one is to train for the CareIT Challenge in June 2011, the other is to get stronger, bigger, fitter. My First week of the gym was as expected not training to the full potential due to the fact I either never knew what the machines did and also I had no plan of attack in what area’s to train. What this means was I jumped from machine to machine training random muscles and missing half the machines due to having no idea what they did. Of course to get the most out of this experience, I needed to find a guide to show me what to do – and this I did.
Why Save Energy?
You may have read the recent posts of Monitoring Electric Use and PowerDown Plugs and you may be thinking “Has this guy gone Eco Friendly??” – the simple answer is I had enough of chucking money away on Gas and Electric Bills and thought it was about time I stopped wasting on items that had no reason to be on. I know people who leave computers and monitors on all the time as well as many other items throughout the house that are effectively sucking down Watts and wasting you money – when that Bill hits the floor, you wonder why it so high right?
PowerDown Energy Saving Plug
I got my hands on a couple of these plugs and as you can tell from the photo, these are UK plugs of course. This nifty device basically has 3 sockets with the top one been for the computer while the one on either side is for your equipment. The goal here is when your computer is on – then all the devices plugged into the sides are powered on (such as Monitor, Printer, Speakers etc). When you close down for the night – it senses that the computer is off (as it is not drawing power) and powers down the equipment on its own.
Now you may say “but it only has two sockets – I need more then that” – in this instance then you plug all the items you need to go off automatically into a extension cable and plug this extension cable into the socket on the left or right. Depending on your layout – this could include all items such as Router, Cable Modem box, Printer, screen, speakers and so forth.
Monitoring Electricity usage
I pay for my Gas and Electricity on a 3 months cycle, I always pass a meter reading to make sure that it is true to life and none of this Estimated stuff as that could leave you with a nasty shock when they do actually read the meters. Due to both the high prices and how much equipment I own that is powered by electricity – I decided to get myself one of those fancy meters that tell you in real time how much is been used and how much it all costs. I Called my Supplier (Souther Electric) and switched to a package which allows the free device.
